We all have different opinions towards it; some of us might be for it and others against it. In most parts of the world Euthanasia is illegal. The Mikado is a comical musical which poked fun at a few aspects of England’s culture at the time. It quickly became popular among both the British and Americans. It eventually became popular in many other countries, which was an extraordinary feat at the time. Gilbert and Sullivan have an interesting history before coming together to make their great works such as The Mikado. Before William Gilbert started writing, he was an attorney. On the side he would write poems which led to a series of his illustrated comical poems getting published by a few popular British magazines. This eventually opened the door to his career as a playwright. During the time Gilbert was starting his writing career, Arthur Sullivan was already making waves as a serious composer. He knew this was what he wanted to do with his life and for good reason. He was a great composer who could make a song to fit any mood. Sullivan was already making a great deal of money with his works and felt very comfortable, but both he and Gilbert could never have foreseen what was next to come. In the 1860’s John Hillingshead, the owner of the Gaiety Theatre hired Gilbert to write and Sullivan to compose their first work together titled Thepsis. In the crowd at the showing of Thepsis was aspiring producer Richard D’Oyly Carte and saw something in the work of Gilbert and Sullivan. He eventually contacts them to write a curtain raiser which turned out to be very profitable. After the money started coming in, G;S were hooked. From then on, their career together officially started. The rest is history. One of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most famous work was a comedy called The Migato. The synopsis of this amusing musical is as follows. Before the story begins, Nanki-Poo, the Mikado’s son, fled from his father’s palace to escape being forced to marry Katisha, an elderly lady of the court. Nanki-Poo has become a traveling performer who falls in love with Yum-Yum, however he can’t marry her because Ko-Ko, her guardian, has decided to marry her himself. Nanki-Poo learns that Ko-Ko has been sentenced to death for violating the Mikado’s law against flirting. Nanki-Poo arrives in Titipu to determine if Ko-Ko has been executed, and therefore, if Yum-Yum is free to marry him. He encounters Pooh-Bah, a corrupt public official, and Pish-Tush, a noble, who informs him that Ko-Ko was saved at the last moment by a set of events, and then raised to the high rank of Lord High Executioner. Nanki-Poo loses hope when he learns that Ko-Ko plans to marry Yum-Yum immediately. There have been no executions in Titipu since Ko-Ko became Lord High Executioner. Ko-Ko receives a letter from The Mikado ordering him to execute someone or else lose his position as Lord High Executioner. As Ko-Ko ponders his dilemma of trying to find someone to execute, Nanki-Poo appears, saying that he’s going to commit suicide because he can’t marry Yum-Yum, the women he loves. Ko-Ko offers to allow Nanki-Poo to marry Yum-Yum for one month, after which, he will become his execution victim. Suddenly, Katisha appears and discovers Nanki-Poo, her lost love. After she is driven away, she rushes to inform the Mikado that his son has been found. As it goes into Act II, Yum-Yum is preparing for her one-month marriage to Nanki-Poo. Ko-Ko arrives with the shocking revelation that he has discovered a law decreeing that when a married man is executed, his widow must be buried alive. Because of this the marriage between Yum-Yum and Nanki-Poo is canceled. Nevertheless, Ko-Ko must find a â€Å"substitute† for execution or he will be decapitated by The Mikado. Nanki-Poo contrives a solution to save Ko-Ko’s life. A false contract confirming his own execution, but in exchange, he must be allowed to marry Yum-Yum and leave the country forever. Ko-Ko agrees. The Mikado finally arrives in Titipu. Ko-Ko believes that the purpose of his visit is to confirm that an execution has taken place so he produces the contract and proceeds to describe the execution with gusto. However, The Mikado has actually come to Titipu in search of his lost son and learns from the contract that Ko-Ko and his ministers executed his son. He declares them guilty of â€Å"composing the death of the Heir Apparent†. Their only hope to avoid execution is to show Nanki-Poo’s alive. This show quickly became extremely popular in England due to how it related to them but was also popular in the U. S. because of how funny, amusing, and ingenious it was. During the time The Mikado was created, the British were going through an â€Å"all things Japanese† craze. They were in a sense obsessed with the Japanese culture and customs for some reason. So in a sense, Gilbert was poking fun at this obsession while writing this play which centers on Japan in a humorous fashion. Let it be understood that he wasn’t making fun of Japan, but playing with the fact that people were trying to mimic the Japanese ways. As The Mikado got introduced to the U. S. , Americans actually started to adopt this trend of all things Japanese. â€Å"Mikado-Mania† was the name given to the American craze. A funny fact about The Mikado is that it’s one of the few musicals that every caused a diplomatic argument. Teenagers feel a need to drink and do drugs to fit in to peer groups. The problem is widespread. The common thoughts that drugs are only in the city where the poor live but that is wrong. Any single person can get drugs from the inner city to the small rural towns of Texas and Nebraska. It doesnt matter where you are. There is a major need for adults to intervene and stop the problem at its beginnings, the adolescents. If we sit here and deny the fact that the problem is there then we are just setting ourselves up for disaster. II.) Review of Literature: A Source 1: The first piece of literature that I used was a book written by Dr. Joseph Nowinski entitled Substance Abuse in Adolescents Young Adults. It was written at the Elmcrest Psychiatric Institute in 1990. The book described Dr. Nowinskis study of adolescent addicts of drugs and alcohol. It goes on to explain the need for the development of treatment plans for adolescents because conventional plans do not work on this age group. B) Source 2: The second source that I used was a journal article entitled Prevalence of substance abuse in a rural teenage population. It was written by Wade Silverman. This article was published in The Journal of Adolescent Chemical Dependency in 1991. This article presented the results of a survey done in a rural school system to assess the prevalence rates of substance use and related lifestyle variables for teens and their parents. C) Source 3: The third source that I used was a newspaper article taken from the February 1, 1994 edition of the Los Angeles Times. The piece was written by Marlene Cimons. In a mature product market, there is little or no scope for the further growth of the product. In simple words, the product has been sold to the maximum number of targeted customers. Hence, customers will demand the product only when the previously bought product has to be replaced. Does maturity necessarily lead to deterioration of market? This question can be answered using the concept of cyclicality. Economics in Business Context (Haslam et al. 2002, p.92) further defines cyclical markets as generally mature markets in which volume fluctuates at or around steady pattern of demand. Depending on the replacement period of the product, the product will be required by the customers every few years, months or weeks. During the period when maximum customers replace the product, the demand for the product will be at its positive peak. This period is followed by a period of low sales. Thus, fluctuation in the demand for a mature product makes it cyclical. Some products have longer replacement periods than the others, making them cyclical. And from what I had heard about Hybrid cars was that they were over priced, small, and not so attractive cars. No wonder nobody owns them. Now I am starting to see them more often and they aren’t as bad as everyone had said. For this exploratory essay I first wanted to figure out what a hybrid car was and how it compared to regular cars. I wanted to find out everything that there is to know about them. I wanted to research the hybrid as if I wanted to buy it, which I do. First off in my search I wanted to figure out what exactly a hybrid car was and how it worked. There are two configurations for hybrid cars. The first configuration uses a gasoline engine to run a generator. The generator supplies electricity to the motor, which drives the wheels, which allows the gasoline engine to run constantly while achieving optimum fuel efficiency. This then minimizes emissions owing to incomplete combustion. A hybrid car with parallel configuration uses both an engine and a motor to drive the wheels depending on driving conditions (1). Hybrid cars use both gas and electric. The gasoline engine is the primary source of power, while the electric motor is used at low speeds. Emissions levels are reduced because the gasoline engine shuts off at low speeds. An additional benefit of the parallel configuration is that no outside source of electric power is required because the engine itself generates the required electricity(How Stuff). As I was searching on the internet; I also had in mind to find out if everything I had been told about hybrid cars was true. They went on a 700 mile trip and compared them to each other. The Prius got 45.5mpg and the Yukon got 16.3mpg, which is a huge difference. On the total trip the Yukon used 43.01 gallons costing $60.24. Whereas the Prius only used 16.3 gallons and it only cost $22.84. To me that is worth buying the Prius. But the most amazing thing was the prius only produced 308 pounds of Co2 in the air but the Yukon produced about 820 pounds. â€Å"Brandon, I just don’t think it’s wise of you to take your car your freshman year of college,† my mother said every time we passed a state. My mom and I had been taking turns driving a car my father bought me in Texas back to Georgia. . Although I would have loved to spend my Saturday with friends back at home, driving my new car from Texas to Georgia on a Saturday wasn’t that bad. I was just so determined to show off my brand new silver 2010 Toyota Camry LE, I didn’t care what anyone said because that car was coming with me to Valdosta State University fall of 2012. I woke up on Sunday anxious to drive my car to church and show it off to all my friends. I was still a bit tired from the night before, after driving all day and downloading tons of songs to add to my playlist that was entitled â€Å"Toyota Tunes†. â€Å"Brandon, while you’re in church, I want you to pray and ask God what you think you should do with your car,† my mother said towards my closed door while I was getting dressed. â€Å"Okay, Mom, but my mind is pretty much made up,† I replied instantly. After I finished getting dressing, I waited for my mother in my car to finish getting dressed in the house. Being behind the wheel of your first car is one of those capturing moments many people get to feel at least once in their life. All I could think about while awaiting my mother’s arrival was all the friends I’d have in college with my cool car. I had visions of girls way out of my league not liking me for who I was, but for what I drove. An d for the funniest reason, I was content with that. As I pulled out of the driveway, my heart began to race and my fingers started to sweat from the grip I had on my steering wheel. Nothing had ever felt so sweet than to watch my neighbors look at me after getting their Sunday paper and see whose car it was I was driving. â€Å"I want you to say the morning prayer in your new car,† my mom said after turning down the gospel music she had blasting through my speakers. The morning prayer was something my mother and I would do whenever she would drop me off at school or another morning activity. It was also our way of airing out any dirty laundry we had with each other by saying our problems aloud to God and whoever else was around to listen. â€Å"Alright mom, I’ll pray. Dear Heavenly Father, I come before you today asking for your protection through these highways and streets. I also pray that you can give my mother an ease of mind and let her know that I will be safe my freshman year with my car. She should have nothing to worry about because she should believe that You will protect me every mile I drive no matter where I drive. If she doesn’t believe that, then maybe that’s something You and her should discuss. In Jesus’ name, Amen.† â€Å"Amen,† she said in an unpleasant manner. â€Å"Disobeying your mother is not of God, Brandon†, she said when we pulled up to the church â€Å", But this is your car and you’re a grown man. Just don’t be surprised if God gives you a sign telling you that you should listen to me on this one. After church, I told my mom that I would take her home, pick up some friends and hang out at one of my good friends’ house for a bit. â€Å"How long will you be out? Because you leave for school in three days and there are still a lot of things you need to do before you go.† â€Å"I’ll be back by ten, I promise,† I said as I grabbed my keys off the counter to get my friends. This would now be my official first time driving my car alone. This was the moment I’ve been awaiting since my father first told me he bought a car for me fresh off the lot in cash. My mother waived at me from the window shaking her head. You ever get that feeling that something is about to happen, but you don’t know what it is. With a very strange gut feeling beginning to occur, I waived back to my mom while wiping the sweat off my hand â€Å"Bittersweet Symphony† by The Verve was my first song of choice. The song is actually about 6 minutes, which is about as lon g as it took for me to get to my friend Marquell’s house. â€Å"Come outside. I’m right around the corner,† I told him over the phone, not mentioning my new car. When he came outside, the look on his face was priceless. â€Å"So this was the ‘little something’ your dad got you for graduation!?† The minute he climbed into the passenger seat, he instantly turned my radio to his Sunday easy listening channel he would always turn to in his beat up Camero. On our way to my friend Diamond’s house, she called me and asked if we could pick up some snacks for the movie we were going to watch when we got to her house. On my way to the store with my friend Marquell, we had the most intellectual conversation on which television shows expanded our minds the most when we were children. â€Å"I don’t care what you say†, Marquell said with confidence,† If it wasn’t for Captain Planet, I wouldn’t be the eco-friendly man I am today. Maybe if you watched more Captain Planet and less He y Arthur, you wouldn’t have all these air fresheners in your car polluting the Earth.† We both took a little time to acknowledge all the Hawaiian Breeze air cleansers I had dangling from my rear-view mirror, as we were approaching a stop light. â€Å"But you can’t tell me my ride doesn’t smell like pineapples and happiness though,† I said to cut the lighthearted tension me and my best friend created. As we pulled into the front of the gas station to get snacks, an old lady behind me honked her horn, attempting to tell me to clear the tail of my car into the parking space so she could get passed. The minute I tapped on the gas pedal, little did I know that my entire outlook on life would change. That was that moment that I got that explanation for that gut feeling. My car had gone into an instant throttle, running clear into the curb in front of me. â€Å"Oh shit, bruh,† my friend Marquell said in disbelief,† I think you fucked something up.† We stared at each other for a moment, not believing the careless mistake I made. The collision happened on the passenger side, so when Marquell got out the car, he was the first one to see the impact damage. When he jumped out the car and looked at my bumper, the face he made at the damage superseded the face he made when he saw my car the first time. â€Å"Tell me it’s not that bad please!† I said at the top of my lungs. I could tell it was already bad by seeing pink fluid running underneath my car when I got out. I honestly don’t think there is enough paper in the world to write the words of unhappiness that flowed from my mouth like an eruption of every foul term I could fathom There was a huge fracture in the middle of the bumper which effected the brake fluid tank to rip open. This also affected the radiator tank, as well. The first person I called was my father to let him know what happened. After that, I called the mechanic he connected me with. The last call I had to make was to my mother, to ask her to come pick me and my friend, Marquell up. This phone call was even harder to make than to my father. The phone only rang once followed by my mother’s voice saying in a subtle tone, â€Å" Before you say anything, know that I told you so before you left†¦Ã¢â‚¬ 
